DAILY COURIER - Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu delivered the closing remarks at the 31st Afreximbank Annual Meetings and the 3rd AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum (ACTIF 2024). In his address, he underscored the critical role that subnational entities play in propelling Africa's development, citing Lagos State as a prime example.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized Lagos State's significant strides in internal revenue generation and strategic partnerships, which have positioned it as a key investment and technological hub in Africa. He highlighted the importance of these efforts in shaping the broader African narrative, showcasing how subnational governments can drive progress and innovation.
"The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) represents a transformative initiative that necessitates collaboration between national and subnational levels to thrive," Sanwo-Olu stated. Despite the challenges, he expressed optimism about AfCFTA's potential to create a unified trade channel across African countries.
Governor Sanwo-Olu pointed out that Lagos State's achievements illustrate the power of leveraging partnerships and embracing homegrown solutions to foster a prosperous future for the continent. "Lagos offers an inspiring model of what is possible when Africa thinks big and thinks ahead," he declared.
Looking ahead, Sanwo-Olu outlined an ambitious vision for Lagos to become a crucial link between Africa and the Caribbean, capitalizing on historical connections and transforming them into a formidable global partnership. "We already have so much in common, and if we synergize properly, there’s no limit to how far we can go," he added.
He also acknowledged the pivotal role of Afreximbank in facilitating these connections. "Afreximbank serves as an inspiration, an enabler, a facilitator, and a financier. They have already established themselves as an excellent bridge-builder between Africa and the Caribbean," he noted.
In conclusion, Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated his commitment to driving progress and innovation for the benefit of all Africans, with Lagos State leading the charge in this collective journey.
